Welcome To 2E0XLG Website
How it started.
Thanks for calling in to my website. I hope your visit is worth it. My name is Chris and I am a keen Ham Radio Operator in the North Yorkshire Dales. I got into radio years ago when I was 14 years old. My father used to take me to work with him on the weekends and I spotted a Citizen Band radio in the workshop. I asked my father what it was and he said " Its a CB son". I was blown away when he told me what it could do and that people have them in wagons and cars and talk to each other.. He then asked me if I wanted it... That was it I was then to become a CBer. I had no power supply so I got one of them plug in the wall ( Grandstand ) power supplies which did 12v for the AM radio. My first contact was a old fella who called himself Buffalo Bill and he told me I was buzzing. I was from that day called BUZBY. I then blew my first rig up.... Humm wonder why... I went from AM to FM then to USB 27.555 for listening only of course. After that I got sick of the CB to many people using it to annoy and cause problems. If you was a old CBer you will know what I mean. Then in 2007 I was introduced to Amateur Radio by 2E0ZTM Fred or Terry as some know him. That was it I was hooked Again. I took my exam for the Foundation Licence in December 2007 at the Burnley Radio Club to find I had a pass and my new licence for Xmas. What a present for christmas that was. M3XLG was the callsign I wanted and thats what I got. I did alot of Contest work on my M3 Callsign and had alot of WINS. Then I progressed onto my Intermediate Licence and now have the Callsign 2E0XLG.
Foundation first year.
In my first year of radio I bought a Yaesu FT-857 & FT-60 hand held radio. I still have the FT-857D and its a fantastic radio. it has been abused over the years but inside its still spot on... Sadly the FT-60 died a gusome deth of Internal Spontanious Combustion whilst I was driving to Skipton on night. I dont do this swapping radios every 5mins I will buy Yaesu again if they ever fail but I have had no problems with them at all. I also was given a old icom IC-225 which I fixed due to it not enjoying a rough ride in the landrover. It was a dry joint that was making the radio lose audio whilst on the move. From then on I started to convert a room in the house as a radio shack which is still in the stages or conversion and I think it will still be when I become a grandad....hi hi. I bought quite a few antennas to play with in my first year.
My antennas are 16ele Jay beam , 8x8 slot fed yagi , X510H , Comet GP15 , G5RV , Antron 99 , 88ele 70cm Jay beam , X80 , Hustler 4BTV , Innov 6ele ect ect. All the beams are for portable work so I had to extend the roof rack on the landrover to take them. Then the welder came out to make a drive on stand to be able to use the antennas out and about. I was then introduced to http://www.vhfcc.org website by M0XLT and started to work the activity evenings. In my first year I have gained a certificate from the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) as the leading foundation licensee of the single operator others section in the low power 2m Contest of 2008.
